5 top ways to personalise a wedding ceremony

A wedding ceremony doesn’t have to be cookie-cutter.  It’s a huge, if not the most important part of your day.  So here are five ideas to consider how to make your special ceremony more unique to you:

  1. Meaningful location or venue

  2. Personalised Vows

  3. Remember a Loved One

  4. Symbolic Moment

  5. Be You!

Have your wedding at a meaningful location or venue

Choosing the place where you want to get married is often when the excitement starts.  Your wedding venue can help set the tone for your wedding.  Do you want a barn wedding, a castle, a beach?  Or how about a family back garden that you played in as a child or the restaurant where you proposed?  Picking a venue that has meaning for you brings an added layer of personalisation for both you and your guests.

Does my wedding venue need a license?

No - if you choose to have a celebrant-led wedding, your wedding venue does not need to have a wedding license. This means you have complete choice about where, when and how you get married.  If you want to sign your legal paperwork during your wedding ceremony, then yes, you do need to make sure that your venue has a license.

Write Personalised Wedding Vows

Your wedding day should be all about you and the person that you have chosen to spend the rest of your life with.  Your wedding vows are your moment to pause and share your feelings and commitments with them.  Putting your vows in your own words gives extra meaning.  Why not consider adding in some of your shared history, or a private joke to make your loved one smile?  Make this moment about giving voice to what brings you together as a couple.

Remember a loved one in your ceremony

Wedding days are moments of huge celebration.  Being surrounded by family and friends, and sharing your love with those important people in your life.  However it’s not uncommon for some important people to be missing on your special day and if you choose there are ways that you can remember them.

Build a symbolic moment into your wedding

Rituals and symbolic moments are becoming more popular in wedding ceremonies with couples choosing these as options.  From handfastings to unity candles, cocktail ceremonies to tree plantings, symbolic moments turn your words of commitment and love into a visual moment - and something that will be talked about well into the Wedding Breakfast!

Be You

The best way to personalise your wedding is to be you! Consider what is special to you and weave it into your ceremony.  Whether you like Lord of The Rings, or Man United, bringing in your passions and sharing them in your ceremony makes it as unique as your fingerprint.  You don’t need a fully themed wedding (although I’m down for that if you are!), but weaving in the occasional quote from your favourite Harry Potter moment will make it extra special.  Always.

A celebrant wedding means you have limitless options in how you celebrate your wedding.   One of the things I love most about being a celebrant is working with couples and encouraging them to explore the huge variety of options available to them.  A celebrant can help to inspire you and make personalised suggestions for your ceremony.  Because there’s nothing better than guests that say “Ah, that ceremony was just so them!”
